Boat Safety Practices

Published on April 7th, 2018

There’s a lot to do and see in summertime in Chicago, including taking advantage of the incredible Lake Michigan. Boating in the summertime is a great way to relax with friends and family and unwind after a long work week. But our injury attorneys in Illinois realize just how dangerous boats can be if they aren’t used properly. If you own a boat or if you spend time on boats, here are some safety tips to keep in mind.

Watch Your Speed

Even if you’re on a speedboat and you’re pulling a tuber or skier behind you, it’s important to watch your speed. Keep in mind that it may not feel like a fast speed while you’re in the boat but being pulled behind the boat is a different story. This is especially true if there is a lot of surrounding boat traffic, as the water will likely be even choppier than usual.

Wear a Lifejacket

This may seem like common sense, but the majority of people who drown were not wearing a lifejacket. There needs to be at least one life jacket per person on the boat. Wear them at all times. In the event that there is an accident are you are rendered unconscious or injured and unable to swim or stay afloat, a life jacket will prevent drowning.

Avoid Alcohol

Save the alcohol for dry land. Studies show that sun and wind exacerbate the effects of alcohol even further, making it even more dangerous to drink while boating. Even if you aren’t driving, swimming while under the influence is extremely dangerous.

Take a Boating Course

If you plan on being around boats a lot, it’s worth taking the time to educate yourself properly via a boating course. This will prepare you for any given situation and give you the confidence to navigate the water. Whether you are driving or a passenger, knowledge will help keep you and your passengers safe.

Our injury attorneys in Illinois don’t want you to be another statistic! Always practice safe boating habits so your time on the water can be fun as well as safe.

If you have been injured while boating, tubing or swimming, call our attorneys to have your questions answered.
